The volcanic soils and tropical climate of Bali’s highlands make it a fertile paradise for farming. Ubud’s surrounding hills are famous not just for rice fields, but for lush plantations growing cocoa, vanilla, cloves, cinnamon, ginger, and coffee. During our yoga teacher training, we take a guided excursion through a traditional Balinese plantation. Here, students learn about local agricultural culture, roast coffee beans over open wood fires, and participate in a mindful herbal tasting.
1. Volcanic Soil Agriculture: The Secret to Bali's Abundance
Bali is dominated by a chain of active volcanoes, including Mount Batur and Mount Agung. Over thousands of years, volcanic ash deposits have enriched the soil with vital minerals like potassium, calcium, and magnesium. This mineral-rich soil allows Balinese farmers to grow high-quality produce without chemical fertilizers. During our guided tour, you will walk past:
- Traditional Coffee Trees: Both Robusta and Arabica trees growing under the shade of cacao and banana leaves.
- Sacred Balinese Spices: Ginger, turmeric, lemongrass, and galangal—the foundations of Balinese herbal medicine (Jamu).
- Tropical Cocoa: Learning how raw cocoa pods are harvested, fermented, and dried to make organic Balinese chocolate.
2. Roasting Coffee Over Open Fire: A Mindful Practice
On our plantation tour, you will participate in the traditional method of roasting coffee beans. You will sit before a brick clay stove, stirring raw green beans in a heavy iron wok over a crackling wood fire. As the beans turn from green to gold and finally to a deep, aromatic brown, you must maintain a steady rhythm to prevent burning. This simple task is a beautiful exercise in **Dharana** (concentration). Once roasted, the beans are ground in a giant wooden mortar and pestle, filling the jungle air with rich aromas. Learn about our full activities program on our YTT Activities page.
3. Mindful Tea and Spice Tasting
After the roasting demonstration, students sit on a wooden deck overlooking a river ravine to enjoy a tasting flight of local teas and coffees:
- Ginger and Turmeric Tea: Warm, anti-inflammatory infusions that soothe muscles after intense asana classes.
- Lemongrass and Pandan Infusion: Calming herbal teas that relax the nervous system.
- Balinese Cocoa: Rich, dark, pure hot chocolate sweetened with local palm sugar.
