Karmaṇy evādhikāras te mā phaleṣhu kadāchana
Mā karma-phala-hetur bhūr mā te sango’stvakarmaṇi
Meaning – “You have a right to perform your prescribed duty, but you are not entitled to the fruits of action. Never consider yourself to be the cause of the results of your activities, and never be attached to not doing your duty.”
श्रेयान् स्वधर्मो विगुणः परधर्मात् स्वनुष्ठितात्
स्वधर्मे निधनं श्रेयः परधर्मो भयावहः || 3.35 ||
Sreyān sva-dharmo viguṇaḥ para-dharmāt sv-anuṣhṭhitāt
Sva-dharme nidhanam sreyaḥ para-dharmo bhayāvahaḥ
Meaning – “It is far better to discharge one’s prescribed duties, even though faulity, than another’s duties perfectly. Destruction in the course of performing one’s own duty is better. Another’s duty is perilous.”
योगस्थः कुरु कर्माणि सङ्गं त्यक्त्वा धनञ्जय |
सिद्ध्यसिद्ध्योः समो भूत्वा समत्वं योग उच्यते || 2.48 ||
Yogasthaḥ kuru karmāṇi sangam tyaktvā dhanañjaya
Siddhyasiddhyoḥ samo bhūtvā samatvam yoga uchyate
Meaning –“Perform all work renouncing attachment. By doing work with evenness of mind, one attains the Supreme.”
समदुःखसुखः स्वस्थः समलोष्टाश्मकाञ्चनः |
तुल्यप्रियाप्रियो धीरस्तुल्यनिन्दात्मसंस्तुतिः || 14.24 ||
Sama-duḥkha-sukhaḥ sva-sthaḥ sama-loṣhṭāśhma-kāńchanaḥ
Tulya-priyāpriyo dhīras tulya-nindātma-samstutih
Meaning –“They are free from the dualities, alike in honor and dishonor, the same in cold and heat, pleasure and pain, praise and reproach. Content with whatever comes unasked, homeless, firm in the truth, self-controlled and steadfast in yoga.”
अनाश्रितः कर्मफलं कार्यं कर्म करोति यः |
स संन्यासी च योगी च न निरग्निर्न चाक्रियः || 6.1 ||
Anāshritaḥ karma-phalam kāryam karma karoti yaḥ
Sa sannyāsī cha yogī cha na niragnir na chākriyaḥ
Meaning –“One who performs prescribed action without being attached to the fruits of his labor is a true renunciate and a yogi, not one who is without fire and without action.”
उद्धरेदात्मनात्मानं नात्मानमवसादयेत् |
आत्मैव ह्यात्मनो बन्धुरात्मैव रिपुरात्मनः || 6.5 ||
Uddhared ātmanātmānam nātmānam avasādayet
Ātmaiva hy ātmano bandhur ātmaiva ripur ātmanaḥ
Meaning –“One must deliver oneself with the help of one’s mind. The mind alone is one’s friend as well as one’s enemy.”
यदा यदा हि धर्मस्य ग्लानिर्भवति भारत |
अभ्युत्थानमधर्मस्य तदात्मानं सृजाम्यहम् ||4.7||
yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānirbhavati bhārata
abhyutthānamadharmasya tadātmānaṃ sṛjāmyaham
Meaning –“Whenever there is a decline of righteousness and rise of unrighteousness, O Arjuna, at that time I manifest Myself.”
पत्रं पुष्पं फलं तोयं यो मे भक्त्या प्रयच्छति |
तदहं भक्त्युपहृतमश्नामि प्रयतात्मनः ||9.26||
patraṃ puṣpaṃ phalaṃ toyaṃ yo me bhaktyā prayacchati
tadahaṃ bhaktyupahṛtamśhnāmi prayatātmanaḥ
Meaning –“Whoever offers Me with devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit or water, I accept that offering made by the pure-hearted with devotion.”
शुचिनां शुचिर्परमाहं करोमि अद्वैतमात्माभिः ||9.28||
śhuchinām śhuchrirparāmāham krūrānāṁ brahma nirāvam
Meaning –“I am the same to all beings; there is none hateful or dear to Me. But those who worship Me with devotion are in Me, and I am also in them.”
नादत्ते कस्यचित्पापं न चैव सुकृतं विभुः |
अज्ञानेनावृतं ज्ञानं तेन मुह्यन्ति जन्तवः ||5.15||
nādatte kasyachitpāpaṃ na chaiva sukṛtaṃ vibhuḥ
ajñānenāvṛtaṃ jñānaṃ tena muhyanti jantavaḥ
Meaning –“The all-pervading Lord does not take on anyone’s sinful or meritorious deeds. Wisdom is obscured by ignorance, and hence all beings are deluded.”
दैवी हि एषा गुणमई मम माया दुरत्यया |
मामेव ये प्रपद्यन्ते मायामेतां तरन्ति ते ||7.14||
daivī hyeṣhā guṇamayyī mama māyā duratyayā
mām eva ye prapadyante māyām etāṃ taranti te
Meaning –“This divine Maya of Mine, consisting of the three gunas (modes of material nature) is difficult to overcome. Those who take refuge in Me alone can cross over this Maya.”
बहूनां जन्मनामन्ते ज्ञानवान्मां प्रपद्यते |
वासुदेवः सर्वमिति स महात्मा सुदुर्लभः ||7.19||
bahūnāṃ janmanām ante jñānavān māṃ prapadyate
vāsudevaḥ sarvam iti sa mahātmā sudurlabhaḥ
Meaning –“After many births, the wise seek refuge in Me, realizing that everything is indeed Vaasudeva (the Supreme Reality). Such a great soul is very rare.”
इच्छा द्वेषः सुखं दुःखं संघातश्चेतना धृतिः |
एतत् क्षेत्रं समासेन सविकारमुदाहृतम् ||13.6||
icchā dveṣhaḥ sukhaṃ duḥkhaṃ saṃghātaśhchetanā dhṛtiḥ
etat kṣhetraṃ samāsena savikāramudāhṛtam
Meaning – “Desire, hatred, pleasure, pain, the body, intelligence and fortitude – this is what is known as the field of experience in summary form, along with its modifications.”
नाभावयोगेन विद्यते नावभावो विभावतः |
उभयैरपि दृष्टोऽन्तस्त्वनयोस्तत्त्वदर्शिभिः ||9.5||
nāvāyogedha vidhyate nā’vāyovedha bhāvataḥ
ubhayairapi dṛṣhṭo’ntast vanayost attvadarshibhiḥ
Meaning – “There is no existence for that which does not exist, and there is no non-existence for that which exists. This truth about these two (existence and non-existence) has been realized by the seers of Truth.”
महात्मानस्तु मामपार्थ दैवीं प्रकृतिमाश्रिताः |
भजन्त्यनन्यमनसो ज्ञात्वा भूतादिमव्ययम् ||9.13||
mahātmānas tu mām pārtha daivīṃ prakṛtim āśhritāḥ
bhajanti ananya-manaso jñātvā bhūtādi-mavyayam
Meaning – “O Arjuna, the great souls who have attained to My transcendental nature engage in exclusive and loving devotional service unto Me, knowing Me to be the imperishable source of all beings.”
सर्वस्य चाहं हृदि सन्निविष्टो मत्तः स्मृतिर्ज्ञानमपोहनं च |
वेदैश्च सर्वैरहमेव वेद्यो वेदान्तकृद्वेदविदेव चाहम् ||15.15||
sarvasya chāhaṃ hṛdi sanniviṣhṭo
mattaḥ smṛtir jñānam apohanaṃ cha
vedaiśh cha sarvair aham eva vedyo
vedānta-kṛd veda-vid eva chāham
Meaning – “I am seated in the hearts of all. From Me arises memory, knowledge and the rationale to forget. Verily, I alone am to be known by all the Vedas. Indeed, I am the author of the Vedanta, and I alone am the knower of the Vedas.”
श्रद्धावाँल्लभते ज्ञानं तत्परः संयतेन्द्रियः |
ज्ञानं लब्ध्वा परां शान्तिमचिरेणाधिगच्छति ||4.39||
śhraddhāvāñllabhate jñānaṃ tatparaḥ saṃyatendriyaḥ
jñānaṃ labdhvā parāṃ śhāntim achireṇādhigacchati
“The person who is faithful, who has control over the mind and senses, attains knowledge. Having attained knowledge, one quickly attains supreme peace.”
नाहं प्रकाशः सर्वस्य योगमायासमावृतः |
मूढोऽयं नाभिजानाति लोको मामजमव्ययम् ||7.25||
nāhaṃ prakāśhaḥ sarvasya yoga-māyā-samāvṛtaḥ
mūḍho’yaṃ nābhijānāti loko mām ajam avyayam
Meaning – “I am not revealed to everyone, being concealed by My yogamaya (divine power of illusion). This deluded world does not recognize Me, the unborn and imperishable.”
यो मामजमनादिं च वेत्ति लोकमहेश्वरम् |
असम्मूढः स मर्त्येषु सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते ||10.3||
yo mām ajam anādiṃ cha vetti loka-maheśhvaram
asammūḍhaḥ sa martyeṣhu sarva-pāpaiḥ pramuchyate
Meaning – “One who knows Me as the unborn, the beginningless, the Supreme Lord of the universe – that person, undeluded among mortals, is freed from all sins.”
मन्मना भव मद्भक्तो मद्याजी मां नमस्कुरु |
मामेवैष्यसि युक्त्वैवमात्मानं मत्परायणः ||9.34||
man-manā bhava mad-bhakto mad-yājī māṃ namaskuru
mām evaiṣhyasi yuktvaivam ātmānaṃ mat-parāyaṇaḥ
Meaning – “Fix your mind on Me, be devoted to Me, sacrifice for Me, bow down to Me. Having thus united your whole self with Me, by My grace you will attain Me, the Supreme Abode.”
